Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, California. DuVernay learned to love art from her aunt Denise. Her aunt worked during the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could follow her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. From this position she started her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
